Curriculum vitae
Associated professor Eddy M. van der Velden, MA, RD, DDSD. Born in the fifties in Rotterdam.
Descendant of a famous Dutch family of art painters (e.g. Jacob van der Velde 1521, Jan van den Velde 1568, Esaias van de Velde 1590) and medical doctors, dating back to the 15th century. Coming from this family and being encouraged by my father and family it seemed a logical step to try and find some unifying factor between the plastic arts and medicine. Being an art painter by profession, with a special interest in the art of medicine and history, I set out to investigate the field of medical tattooing and its applications.
The development of what has come to be termed ‘dermatography’ over the past 25 years could only be accomplished by the opportunity to attend the teachings in classical tattooing techniques (1980-86) of Mitsuaki Owada (Horikin I), an artisan in Japanese traditional body art, and of professor Tadashi Iizawa. After the completion of these studies the honorific title of Horikin III was received.
Eddy M. van der Velden has been working as a researcher, practioner, lecturer and trainer during the last 25 years in a number of (academic) hospitals in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Italy,Israel, Brazil,Birma,Vietnam and Nepal. He has researched and developed the medical applications of tattooing techniques now called dermatography and keratography, which have been accepted as a new medical sub-specialism.
Van der Velden has performed over 54.500 dermatography and over 7.600 keratography treatments since 1980. He has been practicing and conducting research of the applications of dermatography in several medical disciplines, at departments of cranio-oral-maxillo- and facial surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, ophthalmology, dermatology, oncology and urology in several hospitals (see below), and recently at the Brain Research consortium for Advanced Interdisciplinary & Innoative Neuromudulation. Gent, Dunedin school of medicine, University of Otago, New Zealand ( BRAI3N, where he is performing studies on new therapeutical applications of dermatography.
Over the last 5 years, research has been conducted on the dermatography treatment with 5-Fu of therapy-resistant trigeminus neuralgia, other neuropathies, granulomas and epicondylitis. The preliminary results of this research with a long follow-up are very promising.
Other dermatology treatment modalities are using active substances – cytostatica such as bleomycin, other substances such as interleukine, interferon, nor-adrenalin and BCG – and the role of inflammation suppressors such as 5-Fluorouracil and others will be the subject of further research. It is estimated that in the future dermatography may become an important vaccination method for a range of disorders including skin tumours and for increasing the activity of the immune system in other tumours.

In 1996, Eddy van der Velden and dr. Jan Kok founded the Cornea Eye Bank in Nepal for the purpose of collecting corneas left to medical science by deceased persons and preparing these in the Tilganga Eye Hospital laboratory to be used as cornea transplants subsequently. Donations made by the dr.Jan Kok Foundation have made it possible to prepare over 150 of such cornea transplants every year, which are being sent free of charge to other developing countries in Sout-East Asia on request.

Van der Velden is Honorary and Visiting Professor and medical researcher at the dept. of oral maxillo-facial surgery, ath the university Hospital Cuibá, Brasil ( 1998 - present )
Additionally, Van der Velden commenced training ophthalmologists in 1996 to treat leucoma cornea patients by means of keratography (medical eye tattooing) . This procedure enables the often young patients to get rid of the stigmatizing effect of a discoloured cornea, thus enabling them to resume a decent existence in their society. At present between 75 and 125 keratography treatments are performed anually, with the Van der Velden Foundation providing the necessary medical supplies.
In 2005 Eddy van der Velden and Prof.dr.Dirk De Ridder have initiated the project for the innovation of neuromodulation. The newly developed technique involves the application of microchips fed by miniature batteries which are charged using the energy of the patient’s body. The neuromodulations controls are implemented using Smart phones through a process that was developed in cooperation with Delft Technical University the Netherlands, www.braininnovations.nl

Research of innovative and experimental dermatography:
Dermatography with 5-Fu may be considered as a very useful alternative for the treatment of subdermal and subcutaneous fibrosis, as well as for other types of skin retractions and deformities caused by said fibrosis. The results of dermatography with low concentrations of a solution of 5-Fu have been proved clinically and histopathologically effective in reducing excessive production of collagen and favouring the reorganization of scar fibres.Over the last 5 years, research has been conducted on the dermatography treatment with 5-Fu of therapy-resistant trigeminus neuralgia, other neuropathies, granulomas and epicondylitis. The preliminary results of this research with a long follow-up are very promising.
